Between the Local and Global: Representations of Mainstream and Marginal in Contemporary Cinema

Cinema continues to nourish our lives despite the many changes that have been brought about in the art and craft of filmmaking ever since 1895. While Bollywood and Hollywood continue their stronghold, a definite change is blowing around the world’s cultures as to what is being shown, seen and documented.

Big production houses have started looking at Netflix and other streaming houses with fear and wonder. Not just business, streaming giants like Netflix have redefined the terms of engagement with their audiences.  It is perhaps an apostle of the increasing globalized world we live in, where we are able to watch films from around the world from the comfort of our living rooms. Importantly it serves as a galaxy of scintillating narratives where mainstream houses fear or fail to enter. They also fear because streaming houses have employed the very same techniques of the big studios and production houses.

We are interested in the stories that otherwise don’t see the light of the day on such platforms, much as we are fascinated by the innovations from the mainstream industry itself. We are interested in the representations and themes that are marginal, sometimes taboo and some of them so dangerous that a few committed filmmakers risk their lives to bring those stories to us. Stories that deserved to be told, to audiences around the world. The art and craft of cinema would remain poor if it were not for the representations and diversity in cinema, so that it can continue to nourish our lives.

This year, we intend to explore the many themes that surround the representations of mainstream and marginal in contemporary cinema. The 2019 MIMRC edition aims to bring academics and practitioners together to help steer conversations and importantly explore the many facets that immediately surround us and to the many that influence us from afar.

We invite individual and co-authored papers and pre-constituted panels who can identify topics or find themselves at the intersection between local and global cinema representing trends that are dormant and dominant and those in between.

The 2019 MIMRC conference is organized by Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Dubai in collaboration with Queen Mary University of London.
